Bite-sized updates on the latest Canvas features and enhancements!
Important Change Coming to Canvas ePortfolios
Canvas will discontinue ePortfolios in June 2026, and all ePortfolio content will be permanently removed and cannot be retrieved. A new Portfolio tool will replace ePortfolios and will be available before Summer 2026.
-
Alert your students: Students using ePortfolios must download their existing portfolios before June 2026 to preserve their work—content cannot be recovered after the deadline.
-
Reinforce download instructions: The Office of OneIT sent download instructions to all student ePortfolio users on January 12, 2026. Please share this FAQ in your courses: How do I download the contents of my Canvas ePortfolio?
-
Plan for the transition: The new Portfolio tool offers enhanced features and functionality. For more information, review the Introducing Canvas Portfolio blog post. Additional information will be provided by the Office of OneIT in Spring 2026.
Why act now? Transitioning early prevents last-minute complications, gives current students time to preserve their work, and allows future students to benefit from the new tool’s features.
SpeedGrader Performance and Usability Upgrades Now Active
SpeedGrader’s performance and usability upgrades are now enabled by default for all Canvas courses, providing faster load times and enhanced stability for grading.
What’s New
- Faster performance: Improved backend technology handles larger courses and complex assignments more efficiently
- Streamlined interface: Cleaner section drop-down menu and improved submission status display
- Enhanced Comment Editor: Now supports images, math equations, and course links
- Multi-Select Sections filter: Grade multiple sections more efficiently
- Comment Library filter: Quickly find and reuse feedback
- More prominent alerts: Clearer “No Submission” notifications
- Improved rubrics: Automatically display in traditional view
- Moderated grading support: Better tools for collaborative grading workflows
Why These Changes Matter
These improvements are designed to make grading faster and more efficient, especially for larger courses.
For Seamless Poll Everywhere Sessions, Connect to EDUROAM
Help your students get the best Poll Everywhere experience by encouraging them to connect to the EDUROAM wireless network before participating in your polls.
Why EDUROAM matters
- Poll responses sync seamlessly with Poll Everywhere when students authenticate using their NinerNET credentials
- Participation and grade data flow accurately into your Canvas gradebook
- Open networks (like NinerWiFi Guest) or cellular connections don’t authenticate students, which can occasionally cause data collection hiccups
Getting students connected
Share our EDUROAM connection guides with step-by-step instructions for various devices.
Looking ahead
The Poll Everywhere mobile app will be discontinued in 2027. Students will access polls through their web browsers on both mobile devices and computers—another great reason to ensure they’re connected to EDUROAM for the smoothest experience!
