Bite-sized updates on the latest Canvas features and enhancements!

NEW Archiving of Canvas Courses (1-Year)

Starting at the end of Spring 2026, students will only be able to access Canvas courses for up to one year after the semester ends — after which courses will be archived and no longer visible to students. Faculty will retain access to all past courses.

Faculty who need to extend student access beyond the term end date should submit a help ticket to OneIT. Students needing access to an archived course should also submit a help ticket. This update supports our compliance with new federal Title II requirements.

NEW UDOIT Tool for Canvas Course Accessibility

The UDOIT Accessibility Checker (Universal Design Online Inspection Tool, pronounced “You do it”) is a licensed Canvas add-on by Cidi Labs. UDOIT scans course content and generates a report identifying potential accessibility issues — including headings, image alt text, color contrast, link descriptions, and video captions. The built-in U FIX IT tool then guides faculty through resolving flagged issues with an intuitive interface.

NEW Studio Media Embed Improvements

Studio media embedding includes enhancements that provide flexibility and control when adding videos within the Rich Content Editor (RCE). Instructors configure how media displays and can update settings directly in the editor without re-embedding or returning to Studio.

Canvas users can now request captions and transcript features (like rolling transcripts) for videos directly through the Studio embed tool in the RCE. The option to search transcripts is also available, allowing students to more easily review and engage with video content.
